It’s Official

We are moving to Alaska. I accepted an offer from the BSSD in Savoonga. We are so excited. On August 6, we leave from Metro to our new home. Don’t know much about Savoonga? Watch…

  1. You brave adventurers, you. We’re thinking of coming to visit. How many planes, ferries, and dogsleds do we need to reserve?

  2. Well, from Seattle – Just take a boat. ๐Ÿ˜‰ I hear your Father-in-law has a nice salmoning boat.

Or you can board a plane to Anchorage to Nome. In Nome, you can catch your connecting Dog Sled (prearranged by calling 1-888-DOG-SLED) to Unalakleet. Then you wait until winter so you can snowmachine across the Pacific to St. Lawrence Island. It shouldn’t be a long wait though, by this time, and if you are lucky the snowmachine you ordered while passing through Anchorage will be there by the time you are.

Conversely, you can fly into Moscow, take the Russian Rail to the Easternmost tip of Russia, and swim the 37 miles to Gambell. I’m sure if you did that, you could find a nice native person to point you in the direction of Savoonga.

We are a bit less adventurous, however. We leave from DTW to Denver to Anchorage to Nome to Savoonga. That’s not nearly as much fun though.

  3. I’m excited for all three of you Martha. Makes me wish I were young and adventuress. Let me know if I can help in any way.

  4. I still think you are crazy for moving to a volcanic island that is closer to Russia than anywhere else. BUT. Congrats nonetheless ๐Ÿ™‚ I couldn’t think of anyone who probably couldn’t be happier than to go be an eskimo and deal with crazy people (I am telling you…that last part…I have direct knowledge and firsthand experience with).

Anyhoo, cheers to your new job and new life adventure…maybe someday you can get me to come visit (if I survive NOLA and Mardi Gras, of course ;)…).

  5. Dry??? As in no beer? No wine? No Jager? No rum? ARE YOU CRAZY??? Maybe I can’t come visit after all… ๐Ÿ˜‰ lol
